Hair Appointment

I find sitting through a hair appointment about as thrilling as visiting the dentist and I do each as frequently as the other. I suppose this is why, that aside from a few dramatic cuts, I have always had long hair. So when I announced to my family that I was thinking about chopping it off, no one really paid much attention.

Since the temperature here in "paradise" is always a tad too warm for me to leave my hair down, I figured, why not. I browsed hair styles on the net with my oldest daughter. My husband reminded me that I had regretted all other short cuts in the past. My youngest got her shoes on. After flipping a coin a few times, I decided to go for it. Time for a change.

When we arrived at Abigail's salon, tucked away with a whole group of hidden little shops , I half hoped she would be closed, or too busy. No luck, she invited me right in. After a short wait, I showed her a picture of roughly what I wanted. She showed me another picture much closer to what I had in mind and I approved. I confessed my fear to her and asked if she thought it was a good idea. She smiled and nodded and went to work. In no time at all I had a cute new bob.

In Costa Rica, plenty of things are way over priced. However, many things in the local economy tend to be of great value, especially professional services. This includes doctors, dentists, mechanics, and hair dressers. The grand total for a fresh look: 3.000 colones ($6) plus tip. Not bad. I left the salon without even a tinge of regret.
