I am a cat person. I can spot a good cat as soon as I see one. Dogs on the other hand, are, for me, best picked from the pages of a reference book. "Breed X is good with kids, does not shed, grows to be yay big and can be trained to poop in one spot." Great, my kind of dog, I'll have that kind with no exceptions! This perfect dog quickly dissolved from my thoughts the day a sad little puppy with bright, fluffy ears crossed the road just ahead of our car. Brakes on, pup in arm and a name from our daughter: Sunny. In three minutes flat, she was ours.
Sunny was skin and bones, thin of fur and scared to death, but as I approached, she resisted her fears and allowed me to sweep her up. After a week at the vet, she officially became our pet and the next few months revealed to us just what we had. Her transformation was as dramatic as a desert in bloom.
Food and love rejuvenated her spirit, thick sun kissed fur grew back and her tail, which had had not one single hair, unraveled into a full, showy fan. Does she match the dog I had book marked? Not at all. She is much shorter, much hairier and no book could have ever captured her sweet nature and loyal disposition. She is our dog, part of our family and certainly part of the beauty that has entered our lives here in the tropics.

She is adorable! I've always been enamored of certain breeds, but there are so many dogs that need homes that I couldn't conscionably be so picky. We've also experienced the problems with purebreeds. My wife grew up with a spaniel of some sort who had some behavioral issues most likely caused by inbreeding.
I'm not sure how we'll say no to adopting animals there. A stray cat adopted me as a kid, but my parents made me give her away :-(. I'd like my kids to be able to adopt needy animals. I suppose my childhood dream of having a menagerie will eventually come true.
Oh - and we're cat people too. We have 4, all mutts and all wonderful. Including one medium hair when we swore we'd never get anything but shorthairs. But she was too cute to resist!
You now have a loyal friend for LIFE. Good job! I wish more people had your heart and helped the poor, defenseless dogs here.
I've seen incredible transformations with the McKee dogs around the Jaco area. Teri
Hey Sonny, thank you for the sunshine! You may have the next Blue Dog.
