Paved Roads

The new highway connecting the Central Valley to the coast just opened. It has been in the works for decades, in fact when we would mention its name to long time residents, most of them would shrug and say that it would never be completed. It is not the only road to provide better access, many roads in Costa Rica are getting face lifts, including some of the small local routes around Puriscal.
I admit that I am not at all a fan of pot hole laden asphalt roads, but I would not trade the rough gravel roads for anything. Obviously, no asked me, as many all around us are getting paved. The work is supposed to last several years without need of maintenance, and in all fairness I can see how it makes the lives of many a little easier, especially all of the ladies in their impossibly high heels and the young boys with their pimped up ultra low rides. But I wonder, aside from making life a little smoother, if it will really improve the quality of life of the residents here.
Costa Rica is a culture that still walks a lot and rides the local busses. With fewer potholes to weave in and out of, traffic is moving a lot faster and fast cars zipping around blind curves spell disaster in a Country with hardly any sidewalks. The road past our house is still a little too far out of the way to warrant the luxury of pavement, I am happy to say. I did not see this sweet little woman complaining about her relaxing afternoon stroll down the road either.

I like the gravel roads...but with some of the inclines I feel I would like a tea tray to sit on and slide down rather than walk.
Oh and my word verification is 'rubbil'!

You are so right. I enjoy my walks along unpaved roads around here immensely. Life slows down when we concentrate on the next step. And that's not a bad thing.
