I just returned from spending two and a half weeks in Colorado. Reflecting on my trip, I have prepared the following list of things I find rather odd.
I find it rather odd that...
...even after passing through security on my way out of San José, Costa Rica I was randomly frisked by a gloved woman before getting on the plane.
...on my return, rather than wand me on the spot because of a silver bracelet that would not come off at the airport, I was put into a terror proof, glass box and then carefully examined by a handsome man who gave me a lecture over the slightly larger than allowed jars of horseradish I mistakenly packed in my carry on. After my potentially deadly jars were passed over a bomb scanner (?), I was allowed to continue my journey with them. Odd.
...that no one else in the restaurant I was at with a friend seemed to notice that another plane hit another building in Austin, Texas.
...I never noticed before how snow actually sparkles.
...there are miles and miles of neighborhoods with gigantic houses in Colorado.
...there are also miles and miles of beautiful, smooth sidewalks that no one ever uses.
...anyone can find what they are looking for in a store that is the size of three professional football fields.
...I was compelled to embrace sales associates who so eagerly helped me find what I was looking for while shopping in all of those great big stores.
...after six years outside of the US, the only things I miss besides my beautiful family and incredible friends are libraries and well organized roads. (ok, sort of customer service too)
...being home in Costa Rica, my neighbors’ tiny little houses don’t look poor to me.
...it is totally normal, in Costa Rica, to question the color of one’s home and proximity to a church or bakery when asking for an address.
...I don’t think it strange at all that we have been waiting four months for the phone company to install a land line to our house. Annoying, but not the least bit strange.

...moving away from where I was raised has made me feel that I don’t belong anywhere at all.

"You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free.
Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you"
