Raton Perez

The infamous tooth fairy does not cover Latin America. Tiny baby teeth in this part of the world are collected by the tooth mouse, Raton Perez. Little ones should be advised that it is not under the pillow, but inside of a shoe that one must place a fallen tooth.

There is a certain magic to the idea of the fabled creatures who supposedly enter our homes and generously give to our kids. Raton Perez is the only such character that we indulged in. Santa and his crew as well as the Easter Bunny were never planted into our kids minds for no other reason than we are just not holiday people.

I now realize the amount of grief which was avoided by leaving these characters out of the tender minds of our little girls, because recently the true identity of Raton Perez was discovered by our oldest. It turns out that a little note I wrote to her was mistakenly written in the same script as the notes from Raton Perez. OOPS! At first she was proud of her discovery, but soon tears of disappointment streamed down her cheeks. What sorrow had we inflicted upon our darling girl? I felt sorry for having misled her.

Once her watery eyes had dried, she asked if "Raton Perez" would still exchange her fallen teeth for the little notes and money gifts she looked forward to finding in her shoe. With this assured, she took a deep breath and decided that it was all ok. She insisted that her little sister should believe in Raton Perez, because the magic in imagining a little mouse creeping into her shoe and leaving nice thoughts and a little cash was worth the shock of realizing it's really just Mom and Pop.
