Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a national holiday in Costa Rica. Instead of the first Sunday in May, it always falls on August 15. Government offices, schools, banks and many businesses take the day off. Throughout the day, people make the rounds to mothers and grandmothers, by car, bus, horse and on foot. It's a big deal.

Being a mother in Costa Rica is nice. Family is very important here. I never feel the need to explain why I put family before a career. It's just natural. There is special consideration given to families. The airport has a line just for families, the elderly and disabled. Banks and many offices offer the same courtesy. When I am with our little one, I am often offered to go ahead of the crowd. It makes things easier, for everyone.

Although our mother's day clock is still set to May, it's a treat to receive special attention any time. In Costa Rica, mothers get plenty. To all the moms out there, put your feet up and enjoy the day. Happy Mother's Day!
