Agua de Pipa

One of the most refreshing beverages in Costa Rica is, hands down, agua de pipa or coconut water. Coconut water is different from coconut milk. The water comes from the young, green coconuts while the milk is what we get from the mature ones. In Costa Rica, it is called Agua de Pipa and it is sold everywhere, fresh. Sometimes, along the roadside, people will sit with coolers filled with baggies of this refreshing beverage, but the best way is strait from the "pipa."
In any fruit market you can find these green orbs chilled. One strong swing of a sharp blade, and a straw and there you go. The flavor is subtle, and satisfying, especially on a hot day.

The fact that it is so fresh and natural was enough for me to believe it is a healthy drink, but I had no idea how beneficial it is to our bodies. It's less than half the price of a soda pop too. So when you find yourself in Costa Rica, or any tropical, palm bearing part of the world, be sure to take some in.
