Many people choose to relocate to Costa Rica simply because the temperatures, particularly in the mountains, are so moderate. Living at 3400 feet, we escape the burden of both heating in the winter and cooling in the summer and based on temperatures alone, I would say that high altitude, tropical living is absolutely perfect. However, that does not mean that we don’t have to battle the elements. Life in Costa Rica includes rain, wind, earthquakes, landslides and active volcanoes.
Earlier this week a cold front moved over Costa Rica. It was not so much terrible cold that it brought with it, but ripping wind. Monday night it peaked, and as we huddled down under the covers, we lay awake in awe and worry as gust after powerful gust whipped above us, testing the strength of our little tin roof. Many realized our worst fears, losing the roofs over their heads and having to weather the dry, dusty storm completely exposed. We were fortunate, only losing a couple of trees.
Tropical summers always have strong winds, and tropical winters come with unimaginable amounts of water. Good advice for anyone planning on setting up their home in Costa Rica is to dig deep, and screw down. With ample drainages around your home and a solid roof that is well anchored, the excitement of life on this tiny little isthmus can be quite a thrill. Just make sure that you come expecting some adventure.
