What charm?

This is not Bruges. Tourism is thriving in Costa Rica because of the jungles and volcanoes and beaches and the thrill of passing little cows in pretty pastures, not the random, tied together business centers. There is little aesthetic continuity, and that paired with suspicious odors from the streets, well, you can imagine.

I find the charm of the place is not in the sights, sounds or smells at all. Instead it is in knowing the vegetable guys, having a favorite butcher, doing all of my errands on foot, and getting back home to enjoy the natural beauty that attracted us to this funky place in the first place. It's quite a stretch for a city girl, but the simplicity can be quite blissful.

You're so right....I hate the packaged 'experience' the tourist board promotes..and hope that the Rural Tourism initiative comes to something.
But why are tourists so timorous? You can get a bus anywhere and explore on your own.
