The Shovel

A while back, we had an unexpected call at the door. It was someone my husband knew from around town who had come to our house to ask if he could borrow a shovel. My husband was surprised by the random request, but being assured that it was for something quick nearby and it would be returned right away, he obliged. By evening, we figured that the shovel would not be back right away, and after a few days, we assumed that our shovel was gone. It was a shovel, and even though it bothered us that someone would be so bold as to not return it, the event simply confirmed the lesson to never lend what you can't afford to replace. Life went on and we forgot about the shovel.

Some time later, my husband happened to be in town, when the same man stopped him on the street. He was abundantly friendly and made it a point to let my husband know that he still had the shovel and was looking after it. How can one possibly respond? Should "thank you" come next? My husband simply took it with a smile, and probably a heavy roll to the eyes. When he shared the encounter with the rest of us later on, we all broke in to laughter at the idea of this individual "looking after our shovel." We don't expect to ever see it again, but it is comforting to know that it is not being neglected.
